THE _raison d’être_, cause for existence, and origin of this book, may be found in the following extract from a review of the _Florentine Legends_, which appeared in the _Daily Chronicle_ of June 19, 1895:-- ‘Mr. Leland frequently refers throughout his narratives to a certain Flaxius.
