About Lindy Books

Lindy Books is a free library of public-domain books. There are no ads, no accounts and no tracking. It is run by one independent developer and paid for by voluntary donations only.

Privacy policy

Last updated: 23 October 2026. This describes what the code actually does.

What stays on your device

• No cookies. We set none.
• Local storage in your browser keeps your settings (theme, text size, reading mode), your shelf, favourites, hidden books and reading position, a cached copy of the interface language, and an unsent draft of a note. It never leaves your device. Clear it from your browser settings at any time.
• Offline cache. The app (Service Worker) stores its own files, the catalogue and the books you mark as favourite, so they open without a connection.

What reaches our server

• Book requests. To show a book, its text, cover or information is requested from our server, not from third parties.
• A daily count of readers. When a person really uses a page, the app sends one of three words (visit, book opened, translation opened). The server keeps only the number per day. To count each person once per day it makes a one-way hash of a secret, the date, the IP address and the browser name, and deletes it the next day. No IP address or browser name is stored. Known bots are not counted.
• Notes you send (“send to the developer”). We store the text you write, the time, your browser name (user agent), interface language and the page address. Please do not include personal information you do not want us to keep.
• Server logs. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes IP addresses and request details to deliver and protect the site. Our request logs are kept for up to 7 days for fixing errors, then deleted automatically. See the Cloudflare privacy policy.

What we do not do

• No advertising, no analytics or tracking scripts, no social widgets, no fingerprinting, no selling or sharing of data.
• Accounts are switched off. No new sign-ups or log-ins.

Translation and donations

• If you use your browser’s built-in translation, your browser sends the text to its translation provider (for example Google). That is between you and your browser; we receive nothing from it.
• Donations, if any, are handled by Stripe on Stripe’s own pages. We never see card details. See the Stripe privacy policy.

You can ask what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, using the form at the bottom of this page. If you write, include how we can reply.

Terms of use

• Lindy Books is for reading. Use it freely, for any purpose.
• The texts are in the public domain in the United States. Copyright laws differ by country; check your local law before downloading or sharing.
• Book information and titles may contain errors, including machine-made translations of titles. The service is provided as is, without warranty, and may change or stop.
• Please do not overload the service with automated requests. Search engines and AI crawlers are welcome as described in robots.txt.
• If you believe something here should not be, tell us with the form below and we will look at it promptly.

Sources and attributions

• Project Gutenberg. Most texts are public-domain eBooks first published by Project Gutenberg. We remove the Project Gutenberg header, footer and licence, as its licence asks when texts are redistributed, so the texts shown here are not Project Gutenberg editions and this site is not affiliated with or endorsed by Project Gutenberg. Book pages link to the original record. Covers, where shown, come from the same catalogue. Thank you to its volunteers.
• Wikidata. Authors, years, works and editions in other languages come from Wikidata (CC0). Titles in other languages also come from Wikidata, and where none exists, from machine translation.
• Lindy Music uses public-domain and freely licensed recordings from Wikimedia Commons and the Internet Archive, including recordings released by Musopen. Each track shows its own licence and source. Composer portraits come from Wikimedia Commons via Wikidata.

Open-source licences

The app is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript written for this site. It ships no third-party JavaScript libraries and no web fonts; text uses fonts already on your device.

• Cookie は使いません。広告、解析ツール、追跡はありません。
• 設定、本棚、お気に入り、非表示、読んだ位置は、あなたの端末の中（localStorage と Service Worker のキャッシュ）だけに保存します。
• サーバーには、1日の利用者の数だけを記録します。同じ人を1日1回だけ数えるために、IPアドレスとブラウザー名から一方向のハッシュを作り、翌日に消します。IPアドレスやブラウザー名は保存しません。
• 「開発者に送る」で送った文は、送信時刻、ブラウザー名、表示言語、ページのURLと一緒に保存します。
• Cloudflare（ホスティング）は配信と保護のために IP アドレスなどを処理します。こちらのリクエスト記録は最大7日で自動的に消えます。
• ブラウザーの翻訳機能を使うと、本文はブラウザーの翻訳会社（Google など）に送られます。寄付は Stripe のページで行い、カード情報はこちらに届きません。アカウント機能は止めています。
• 保存している情報の確認や削除の依頼は、このページの下のフォームからどうぞ。

利用について

読むためなら自由に使えます。本文は米国でパブリックドメインです。国によって著作権の期間が違うので、保存や共有の前にお住まいの国の法律を確かめてください。情報や機械翻訳の題名には誤りがあり得ます。無保証で、内容は変わることがあります。

本文の多くは Project Gutenberg の電子書籍です。Project Gutenberg のライセンスに従い、ヘッダーとライセンス文を外しているため、Project Gutenberg 版ではなく、同団体とは関係がありません。著者・年・版の情報は Wikidata（CC0）から。Lindy Music の音源は Wikimedia Commons と Internet Archive（Musopen を含む）で、曲ごとにライセンスを表示しています。

オープンソース

外部の JavaScript ライブラリーやWebフォントは配信していません。文字は端末のフォントで表示します。
